You kids get outta my yard!

I have become the grouchy old lady that is always yelling at kids to get out of her yard. Not that I actually have kids that come in my yard- being that I live in a 55 and over community. But when we went out to the beach the other evening to watch the sunset, there were kids everywhere. I had forgotten that this was Easter break for many families and oodles were visiting the island on vacation. So I set my tripod up in an area where there were no people, and waited for the sun to begin to set. And wouldn't you know it, a family decides to gather on the water's edge right in front of where I was set up.

It's a big beach and plenty of room, so no problem... I picked my tripod up and walked a ways up the beach to another area where there was no one around. I found a spot right behind a small dune with sea oats waving in the breeze and a clear view of where the sun would set. I'll be damned, but two couples came strolling down the beach and decided to stand right in front of my view of where the sun would set. The two guys had their shirts off and huge bellies hanging over their shorts- not what I had in mind for my sunset photos. Now I was becoming seriously irritated!

But I didn't say a word and once again, I picked up my tripod and went searching for a clear view, another area with no people and for the third time set up and waited for the sunset. No sooner did I get set up and my tripod level, and here came another family headed right for the water edge directly in front of me. As I stood watching them, wondering if they would move on, it occurred to me that under the right circumstances I was capable of murder.

Hoping the fourth move would be the last, I moved yet again. I found another small dune with sea oats, set my tripod up behind it and prepared to take some sunset shots. The sun was getting ready to set and I had a clear view...

And here came a couple with 5 wild kids running and shrieking- sweet jezzuz, does no one use birth control anymore?!? One kid jumped right up on top of the dune where I was set up (never mind the signs all over saying it is a criminal offense to disturb the dunes and sea oats) and her mother said: "Oh goody! Let that lady take some pictures of you!" That is when I wanted to scream- "You kids get outta my yard!". But I didn't. I grit my teeth and told the woman I was actually set up to take photos of the sunset. She seemed surprised I wasn't just waiting for her and her horde of kids to arrive so I could photograph them. Lucky for me, something else caught the kids eyes and down the beach they ran, out of my view of the sunset.

And after all my problems with the tourists and finding an unobstructed view of the sunset, I ended up with one so-so photo. For some reason, all my photos had a big red reflection circle. I don't know if I had my settings screwed up or what was going on. Perhaps my camera was as irritated as I was with the tourists.
Peace-
Linda

I had such a chuckle reading this...this would be my raucous family I'm sure you are talking about, hahaha.

But yet I know what you mean. When it's just Mike and I we seem to be aware of other people but when we have the grandkids we get scattered in our thinking and probably have done those same things..haha And of course some stranger i just waiting to take pics of them.....that one cracked me up.

the photos are really nice though.

Oh gosh, some people think the world is just waiting for them to show up! I know it was irritating to have to move, and move, and move.....but I'm always amused at the way you tell these things. Your sunset photos are great and the last one is gorgeous!

i'm not a fan of kids and I don't hide it when I meet people like the ones you did. I am always yelling at kdis to get out of our yards because their parents have told them they can go anywhere. no. not our yard. *shakes fist*

I ignore kids on the whole (I don't want people thinking I go around actively yelling at kids, i stay out of their way, and avoid places where there are a lot of kids), and when I meet people like that lady who hinted at you taking a photo, I would have probably said something that would have gotten me in trouble :p

having said that, the photos look wonderful :) really neat cloud formations.

" The two guys had their shirts off and huge bellies hanging over their shorts- not what I had in mind for my sunset photos."

there is probably a market for that somewhere. could be making money :p

I think your photos turned out magnificent, Linda, despite the frustration in actually getting them. I've had five kids, well, four who were close in age growing up but I can say that I was always aware of those around us if we went anywhere. I always made sure my kids respected other people's space and, if we had seen your camera set up for photos, we would have steered clear out of respect. I'm so glad you didn't get a pic of the big bellies ~ lol

Speaking of unruly kids, we had a family of them living right across the road from us and our street went to hell in eight months. Litter everywhere and the kids were constantly grouped outside our house. No parental control as they would be out til late at night too. Quite a few of the neighbours found it all very upsetting too. The family was evicted a month ago because of damage they caused to the house they rented and I'm not surprised with the state she allowed her kids to make of our street. Anyhow, our street is back to being peaceful and calm again....blissful sigh ~ :)

Well, you kept at it and got some beautiful shots without the "kids"! Thanks for sharing, I love looking at your beach shots.

I really love that shell shot too.. are they really just lying there like that? or did you arrange lots of them in one spot? the seagull is pretty cute too.. love looking at them...your sunset through the grasses is lovely... any sea sunset is great...sigh......

Awp!!! How clueless can people be???!!! I'm glad you persevered though. and just see all the pretty shells! I'm always happy to find just ONE that isn't a clam or a mussel and you've got PILES of them right there at your feet. Your posts always make me laugh Linda.

side comment to serena- it is really nice to see parents who actually parent (not that I didn't think you didn't with your kids turning out so well and happy looking :) hopefully that makes sense:) glad to her they got evicted and that your street is back to normal.

I think you got some great shots. With my big mouth, I would have told the kid to beat it and the mom too.
