Monday Photo of the Week...

Though the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida is quite a way north east of us, we are able to see the night time space launches. So last night we went out just before the countdown began and took photos when Discovery appeared in the sky. It was just at sunset and the sky had darkened enough that we could see it. You can click to enlarge all the photos to full size.

This is the first photo I took-

Okay- that's a big fat lie-LOL! We are too far away to see it this closely, I snagged this photo off the Internet. The photos I got aren't near as impressive. This is what it really looked like in our area-

Here it is just shooting into the sky above a carport across the street from us.

Going higher...

And higher...

And higher...

And now it disappears into the heavens...

A few minutes later, this white cloudy looking area appeared.

And finally as night sets in all the dark sky shows is a white plume left behind. It wasn't a real cloud, there wasn't a cloud in the sky last night- perfectly clear. I assume this is just pollutants left by Discovery.

I couldn't help but think of all our tax dollars flying into space. Is it really worth it? I honestly don't know.
Peace-
Linda

OH, you tease....I was totally duped and in awe that you got a pic THAT close! LOL The pics you did actually get though were pretty darned good....amazing at the one where it just disappeared beyond the atmosphere.

I tend to agree with you. The amount of money they spend on space exploration is phenomenal! I believe it could be put to much better use for our own planet.

I like how your photos show the progression of the shuttle. hard to say if its a waste of time and money, right now it is, but who is to say in a year it wouldn't be?

You had me fooled! Couldn't believe the photo you got, ha. but the others are certainly interesting.

Is it worth it...? No, I don't think so really.

LOL! I'm gullible as the next one, so you had me there for a moment. But I think it's exciting to see, even from a distance and you got some good shots.
Whether its worth the money or not, I think I'd rather see my tax money go into space than some of the things it's being spent on these days! I'm still waiting for my bonus. ;0)
